this coming Saturday night with a creative touring group from Porltand, yourdrugsmymoney.
We will be doing a collaborative set at the end of the night and there is talk of putting this out on yourdrugsmymoneys' record label if it comes out well.

Because I've been so into Power Noize, Noise and Industrial/EBMish stuff lately, my performance will reflect a lot of that
sensibility.
I'm so excited, I just purchase a Feedback eliminator which will allow me to use very heavy distortion with vocals and found objects
without having all the uncontrollable feedback problems that occur with live microphones.

I'll also be projecting my new lo fi, toy digital video animations that I"ve been making at the show.
Come on out to an unusual creative show in the South Bay if you don't have anything to do.
headlining artist at this weekend's Boise Experimental
Music Festival.

I will be doing a set that will include several pieces
for solo voice and electronics. I've really been working on
coming up with new extended vocal techniques for this particular
show.

I'll also be doing a piece for tuned bar pint glasses and clitoral vibrators.
As odd as that sounds, this piece has been coming out beautifully
in my warmup gigs.................some pieces for Green plastic tubing...........a
formal piece that I wrote to mourn the passing of my dear friend, Ali Farka Toure
scored for Shakuhachi, overtones and electronics................a piece for
toy bells and a piece to celebrate my new endorsement with the Cooperman
Drum company featuring a traditional Irish Bodrhan, a traditional South Indian Kanjira,
a middleeastern Riq, a Glen Velez Bodrhan-esque large frame drum and a new invention
called a Hadjira.

I'm really excited about this gig and on top of it all, on Saturday we will be trying out a brand new internet
technology called NINJA jam and will be the backup band (Krispen Hartung and myself) for Rainer Straschill's
headlining gig in a Munich, Germany nightclub...................this is amazing new technology that allows you to rhythmically
control the intrinsic latency of real time audio communication over the web.

Then I'll be doing a wonderful improvisatory set with my dear friend Ted Killian from Oregon and the amazing
Jeff Kaiser, experimental trumpet/electronics musician from Los Angeles.

Then Krispen (who is organizing this amazing huge shebang will be taking me out to the Boise Goth
club on Sunday and I'll be home on Monday..............................WEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so excited, I can't sleep.

nO thiNg-www.looppool.info
(Aka Rick Walker, aka |()()p.p()()|, aka Ultra Violette, aka PurpleIHand)
Working with everything from found sound objects to invented instruments: extended vocal techniques to state of the art digital signal processing, master percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Rick Walker has
toured the world as a solo headlining seminal figure in the International Live Looping Movement. Playing in 12 countries in the past 3 years alone including a featured spot at the prestigious Kobe Underground Festival in Japan last summer as a Goth/Industrial artist , he has started a new project called nO thiNg to explore the dark side experimental electronica.
Fresh from his debut of this project at the Disquiet Festival (Dark Ambient/Noise) he will be the Headlinig Artist at
the Boise Experimental Music Festival on April 28th.

Loma Prieta- http://www.dark-tekno.com/lomaprieta/
14 inches of uplift, 5.5 feet of lateral slippage, 7.1 on the Ricther scale, 20 seconds long, from a depth of 11 miles. This is the chaos that Loma Prieta unleashes, as duo Phreaki Boi and Jawa blend their styles of d'n'b, noize, broken beats, industrial, and even trance.

Ghreg on Earth- http://www.phosphene.org/
His distinctive sound, heavily influenced by his passion for Industrial Music from the 1980s, IDM from the early 90s and Dark Ambient, evolved and found its way into parties and festivals throughout the United States and the World. His intention is to convey a diverse range of powerful trance dancing experiences to the planet. With this intention in mind, he is quickly being recognized as one of the most sought after psychedlic electronic music producers.

Heartworm-
Disturbed landscape of deconstructed beats, bursts of pure noise and constantly shifting time changes, all tempered with subtle ambience, layered sampling and drenched in effects.(From DHR Bio) Tonight, he steps behind the decks to battle, DTC's very own, Jawa!

TeflonJacket- http://electroset.net
Holding a resident DJ spot with Tokyo Electric and Neurogenesix, TeflonJacket's musical taste was formed during the early 80s when bands like Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Nitzer Ebb were the norm. Harkening to days past, his style can best be described as "Techno Body Music" or new music with a very dark and retro feel.

White Rabbit- www.spaz.org, www.luciddreamlounge.zoomshare.com
Getting his origins from the old skool deathrock and goth clubs such as the Original One Step Beyond, in the South bay, the twilight Zone, Drug#6 and Catacombs to being one of the original creators of A Winter Gone By. Guest appearences at House of Usher and rodericks chamber. Current musical delima hits the dance floor with a twisted cross of wicked breaks, goth, dark electro and house mixed and up with an almost jack dangers style. Current projects include the Lucid Dream Lounge, a dark masquerade cabaret speakeasy and organizing/playing at spaz soundsytem events.

I just made this post to the electronic music production tribe discussion on creating glitch effects. I was inspired by John Zorko's creative post about using wrought iron pieces to create acoustic glitch techniques and.........well, I put them on line..............they are from my live looping CD so they are a couple of years old.

my post:
Found Glitch Effects
John Zorko's suggestion of using a wrought iron work
jogged my memory for a great glitchey sound made from
found objects.

take several glasses (made of heavy glass NOT crystal or anything lightweight) that have different pitches if you clink them. Bar Glasses are fantastic for this.

and

1)Then go find an old piece of rusted rebar.

turn the glasses upside down and rub the
openings of them down the rusted rebar.............the irregularities in the metal will cause really fast glitching sounds that have the pitch of the glass you are rubbing against it

2) take one to several bullet clitoral vibrators with a high RPM motor.
Turn them on and drop them into the bottoms of the glasses.

What happens is the vibrator makes a very rapid staccato drilling sound on the bottom of the glass but occasionally, they will jump up and hit the glass higher up , ringing it rapicdly like a glass telephone bell (the old fashioned metal ringer styled telephones).

On my last CD, I came up with a 'found' minor-ish scale of six diffently pitched bar glasses (I went to a bar supply house and asked the manager if I could take half an hour and try out every bar glass in the place).

What is cool is that the 'chord' that is created by different glasses sounding at random times is constantly changing in rhythm and texture.

I then took the percieved fundamental tone of my found scale and
turned it on it's side letting it constantly ring the glass. I made a separate solo loop on my Elextrix Repeater and then used a midi wind synth controller to play the 'melody' over three octaves while my long random
'chord' looped.

If anyone is interested I'll post the two mp3s of the pieces I used those techniques at
www.looppool.info/Translucent...reenPlastic/

I also use very tiny ball bearings or shotgun shot in large brass candy dishes...................you gong the candy dish with your thumb and the ball bearings cause a glitchy sound.

I realize this isn't all that electronic, although I use a lot of DSP effects to process the results, but I am fascinated by trying to make acoustic sounds that sound as if they are electronic or computer manipulated sounds.

Featuring 21 tracks, PURPLE HAND has more groove on it that previous CDs that I've put out and I am proud to have designed or heavily tweaked virtually ever sound on the CD myself.
I also agonized over what to finally include and culled from 305 minutes of completed tracks that I've written for it specifically in the last two years of my life.

I've also decided to split my music into two different projects:
PURPLE HAND will be my Abstract Electronica project from now on
and
L()()p.p()()L will continue to be my Live Looping project.

I'll be selling the CDs myself for $15 apiece including shipping and handling to the US and Canada but for the members of this tribe I'll sell it for $10/CD for the next month just to thank you for your support and interest.

thanks everyone for your support of my artistry. I make all of my living from being a creative artist and , as you well, know, it is exceedingly difficult to do that in this day and age and economy so any financial support is greatly appreciated and keeps the wolfs of the economic realities of life at bay.

I also want to thank the support of my sponsors:
Gibson (for the fabulous EDP Echoplex), Cycling '74 without whose PLUGGO plugins I could have never made this CD, Ableton's LIVE, Antares (for the incredible voice to synth software KANTOS), Bias for their Peak sound editor on Mac OSX, Ms. Piggy (for scratching any sound in my computer with a turntable), Augustus Loop, Bob Collier for his custom Kalimbas and Dror Sinai of Rhythm Fusion, the best percussion store on the planet for all of his generosity.

I only endorse things I truly believe in so I can give an enthusiastic 'two thumbs up' to all of these wonderful and truly innovative companies.

Thanks Kim for all of your energy, time and financial contribution to this community.

ps Sadly, Concert headliner, Italy's Roberto Zorzi's has had to cancel his tour to the US because of the illness of his partner Paola. Our heart is with them both and we pray for her speedy recovery.

amazing photograph of Jacqueline Jensen dancing during
the whimsical portion of our performance at the Santa Cruz Digital Arts Festival.

We just viewed all four videographers footage of that evening over at David Tritrams' home in San Jose (along with his wonderful live animation of the same event).

It is truly amazing footage and videographer Mariah Salisbury is currently working on an edit of it as we speak.

After the very dark black and white piece that we did that evening, two young guys approached me at a bar to talk about the piece. The first one said that it was so intense that he started crying in the middle of it........the other one nervously told me that he like my music but that the piece was so intense that he had to leave the building and only came back after it was over to see the rest of my set.

To make someone cry and someone else run from the performance
is pretty amazing. It says a lot about the wonderful performance by Jacqueline Jensen, Niki Selkin and Trey Donovan (the butoh dancers), David Tristram's live digital animation
and Rob Wood's stark and minimalist lighting.

It was an amazing evening and I want to officially thank everyone of the eight artists involved for all their wonderful gifts.

Hi gang,

I'm really excited to be collaborating with several really fine artists in next weekend's Santa Cruz Digital Art Festival.

I'm putting together a fascinating improvisatory collaborative show with Butoh Dancers NIKI SELKEN and JACQUELINE JENSEN, the wonderful digital video animator DAVID TRISTRAM all of which will be filmed in real time by two documentary 16 mm filmakers. All the artists will be creating
simultaneously and there will be digital artwork on display.

Our set time will be Friday night, April 23 at 10 p.m. at the UNION coffeshop in downtown Santa Cruz (near the corner of Water and Cedar across from the parking garage).

ALL AGES are WELCOME, we encourage that
you bring children who will find the evening fascinating.
There is a $5-$15 donation requested with no one turned away for lack of funds. All funds will be used to buy art supplies for kids in Santa Cruz and a school in Nepal where one of our organizers has been volunteering for
the past two months.

All of this will only add to the creativity of some very special artists who I feel privileged to be on the same bill with:

MATT HERMAN (7:30 p.m.)will be live looping on the instrument called the stick (a cross between a bass guitar and regular guitar that uses tapping technique)

AMAR CHAUDHARY (8:00 p.m.) will be making all original laptop computer music (that he designed himself!) with various toy and ethnic instruments inspired
by the art hanging on the walls

and the incomparably wierd and wonderful
WAYNE JACKSON (9:00 p.m.) who will be playing circuit bent toys and his own proprietary looping software on laptop.

This amazing three day festival is being put on by DARYL WISE, SYNTHIA PAYNE, ALICE PALACIO, JESSE ROSE DEROOY, PETER CHESTER
and a host of other volunteers. We are so blessed that people this talented and professional donate so much of their time to bring a world class show to the people of Santa Cruz. I really want to take this moment to acknowledge their vision and their gift to us all. Thanks so much!

Here's the skinny for the whole festival:

Being a looper, to me, is almost like being Sponk, Texas living in L.A. and hoping to find other people from Sponk.

I'm curious. For me, looping was an accident. I decided one day, as I was moving back to L.A. that instead of being guitarist/sideman, I would play solo guitar, no singing, just guitar, and see if I could get and keep an audience interested in the music. It worked.

One day as I was working up my set, I was screwing around with my Roland GP-100 in the Delay Department (you can guess what's coming next), I set the Feedback to 100 and the delay time to 4.5 seconds (the longest it'd go.) I played some chords and of course they echoed back, repeating infinitely. 'Cool', I thought. Then I played some line against the chords, and they became implanted inside what was to be my first loop. 'VERY Cool', I thought.

I actually went on to use this extremely limited version of looping in my performances, and man was it limited. Basically I had an empty space of 4.5 seconds that I had to create a 4/4, 3/4 or whatever/4 to fill that space exactly. If I was off, the loop wouldn't work. (I used a trick of putting very quiet delays that split the 'empty space' into four equal parts and used them as a metronomic device.) I actually did a recording session of my own loops this way, but using a real metronome instead. Surprisingly, they weren't bad. But it was limited and frustrating so...

...then went on a search to find devices that were dedicated to this effect. I eventually wound up with the Lexicon JamMan, which to this day I love and still work with.

I'd describe my looping as pretty conventional though. I play the guitar as usual and build layers. Sometimes create faux bass, faux percussion (by hitting or muting the strings, etc.) or just unusual textures by way of DSP.

In my act, I call myself the Eclectic Guitarist because, I merge varying styles from jazz, to classic rock, to country, to african, to whatever the whim may be. So I think the actual looping effect is secondary to what I play on my guitar. In other words, the loop supports the music, the music doesn't support the loop. If you'd like to get an idea of just how conventional my looping is, you can listen at my website, www.vincognito.com.

My question to others is, what kind of music do you perform in the loop setting? Is it tonal? Avante Garde? Trance-y? Conventional forms? Basically my music is VERY accessible to the lay listener. I'm curious what forms others are employing...

the burgeoning Live Looping movement will be playing two concerts in the Bay Area (Northern California) this coming week.

Andre LaFosse, who is , arguably, the greatest master of the very deep Gibson Echoplex EDP + and who plays what he calls
'guitar turntablism' will be playing a live looping show
on this Friday evening in Mountain View at the STARZ Dance Studio (223 Moffet Blvd.-- 2 minutes from the Mountain View Caltrans) at 8 p.m. with another very creative looper, percussionist Jon Wagner. They will be doing solo sets and duo sets. Tix are $10/door with no one turned away for lack of funds.

Then the next day there will be a clinic with both artists at 4 p.m. and a concert at 8 p.m. in Oakland at 3150 Adeline Street (at 32nd).

tix are $10 for the clinic and $10 for the evening performance
(or $5 if you have attended the clinic) and , again, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

I have performed and toured with both of these artists and they are truly amazing and wonderful musicians.

this will also be a rare opportunity to get to ask a lot of questions of some one who is a master of this amazing piece of electronic DSP hardware.
